Call Center Activated as Rumor Control Hotline
The Broward County Call Center was activated today as the Rumor Control Hotline for residents. The telephone number is 954-831-4000. The hotline will be available 24-hour-a-day. At a press conference earlier today, Roger Desjarlais, Broward County Administrator, and Sheriff Ken Jenne asked the community to remain calm and to use the Rumor Control Hotline, instead of 911, for any questions they may have. The 911 system is to be used for emergency purposes only. Sheriff Ken Jenne reinforced the criminality of false bomb threats and/or hoaxes and said they will be investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The call takers at the Center are trained to answer general questions regarding the following:
w Security measures that impact the general public at Port Everglades for cruise passengers.
w Security measures that impact the general public at the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.
w General questions regarding the recent Anthrax incident.
w General precautions to take regarding personal security as it relates to the U.S. mail.
w Information about any County government agency of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners.
The likelihood of receiving a package or letter containing suspicious substances is remote. However, it is important for citizens to be aware of characteristics that are common to suspicious packages. Some indicators include, but are not limited to, the following:

w Leave the letter or package alone. Do not move the item.
w The individual in contact with the letter should leave the vicinity immediately.
w Other individuals within the vicinity of the letter should also leave immediately.
w Contact your davie police at 954-693-8200 and explain what has occurred.
w Results of the test will be available in time to determine what, if any, treatment should be implemented.
w Individuals who open or have contact with the letter or package containing an unknown substance should thoroughly wash their hands with soap and water.
w There is no need to start antibiotics prior to the analysis of the letter or package.
w Contact information of all individuals that may have been exposed should be collected immediately.
